Tell us a bit about you as a mum
Hi I’m Chichi and mum to a 5 year Siobi and 2 year old Chizobe. I’m married and I live in Essex UK.
Tell us about your current job
I run my own business as a Business Coach as well as a digital marketing agency supporting small businesses with their online marketing.
Prior to this I worked as a Project Manager for a bank in London.
How easy have you found being a working mum?
How long is a piece of string lol! I think like with anything it has its ups and downs. The main thing has been to get really clear on what kind of life I want and what goals I am trying to achieve so that I can ensure all my actions align with it.
In addition, not being afraid to get the support I need has been important. I have a really good childminder and a cleaner who comes once a week to help me.
Juggling my business, job and motherhood was a challenging season but I knew it was short term so I focused on what I needed to get done so that I could leave my 9-5 job.
How have you found trying to balance being a mum with your current role?
I think it is a lot easier now. Previously I was also in a 9-5 full time role, while running my business. Now having a good schedule and routine helps.
Like most mums I often find that I push my own needs down to the bottom, so I need to always try to remember to take care of me, so that I can take care of them.
I aim to work during school hours, and keep evenings and weekends for family time.
What has kept you going throughout your journey so far?
Good mentors, having a strong vision for my business, the work that I do – I love it, so it never feels like work, and also getting support.
I am in touch with other working mums and we support and encourage each other. Also being able to see the progress I am making is very encouraging too.
What advice would you offer anyone who is about to return to work after having a child?
Know what your long term goal is. Be kind to yourself and get the support you need. Recognise that sometimes we have to make short term sacrifices so that we can have long term freedom in our life.
What’s the best piece of advice someone gave you about combining motherhood with a job?
Be kind to yourself and remember why you’re doing it. Enjoy the moments with your children because they won’t be little forever. Design the life you want first and build your job/career/business around it.
Chichi built her business around her corporate job and children until recently when she was able to resign and work on her business full time.
